Quick answer

Most Samsung dishwashers that won't drain aren't broken. The water is usually stuck behind a clogged sink drain or garbage disposal, a pinched or kinked drain hose, or a dirty filter and drain area. Samsung's own checklist starts with the sink, not the dishwasher.

Samsung's no-drain checklist, in order:

  1. Check the sink drain and garbage disposal. Clear the disposal. If the disposal is brand new, make sure its knockout plug (disposal cap) was removed; Samsung says a left-in cap can block the drain.
  2. Check the drain hose. Right after installation, Samsung says the most common cause is the dishwasher sitting on its own drain hose and pinching it shut. The next most common: the hose has no air gap and no "high loop." Then look for kinks and damage.
  3. Run the sink for about 30 seconds. If the sink itself doesn't drain, it's a plumbing problem, not the dishwasher.
  4. Clean the filter and drain area, and put it back together correctly. Samsung warns that missing or wrongly seated filter parts can cause drain errors by themselves.
  5. Rule out a frozen drain line in a cold space. Samsung notes frozen lines aren't covered by the warranty.

Codes: Samsung lists 5C, SC, 5E, and SE as drain errors and OC, 0C, and oE as over-level errors. Don't reset first: Samsung says to troubleshoot before you reset, or the code will just come back.

If the checks don't fix it, the usual failed parts are the drain pump, a clogged sump-to-pump hose, a stuck check valve, or, less often, the control board.

Repair or replace? Free fixes and a drain pump usually make repair the better deal. A control board on a dishwasher near the end of its life is where replacing starts to win. See the calculator below.

Which Samsung dishwasher do you have?

Find the model and serial number on the label on the edge of the inner door or the side of the tub (open the door and look along the top or side edge). You need it to order the right filter or pump and to check warranty status.

TypeModel prefix (examples)Filter styleWhere water gets stuckNotes
Standard spray arm (StormWash, most current models)Usually DW80 (check label)Coarse filter + fine filter cylinder at the bottom of the tubFilter, sump, drain hose, sink or disposalFilter is tool-free on most models
WaterWall modelsDW80 family (check label)Filter assembly at the bottom; reflector along the backFilter, sump, reflector areaSamsung's 1E / IE code means a clogged filter on WaterWall models
Older or rotary-arm modelsVariesCheck your manualFilter, drain pumpOn these, 1E / IE can point to a heater fault instead

Samsung notes that on some models the drain pump is removable for cleaning once the filter is out; others need a technician. Your user manual says which kind you have.

Is it the dishwasher or the sink? (30-second test)

Samsung's simplest test: run water in the sink the dishwasher drains into for about 30 seconds.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

Samsung's own steps for a dishwasher that won't drain, plus what each one means:

  1. Turn the dishwasher off. If there's standing water, scoop or sponge most of it out into a bowl before you touch the filter. Wear gloves.
  2. Clear the sink and disposal. If the disposal is new, check the knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet was knocked out and removed. A plugged inlet stops the dishwasher from draining at all.
  3. Pull the toe-kick panel or look under the sink and follow the drain hose. Samsung says the most common post-install cause is the dishwasher sitting on top of its own drain hose. The hose should be straight, not pinched shut, kinked, bent, or damaged.
  4. Check for an air gap or a high loop. Depending on your local code, Samsung says the hose connects through an air gap (the small chrome cap on the sink deck) or runs in a high loop up under the counter before it drops to the drain. This stops dirty sink water from flowing back. If neither is present, that's a likely cause.
  5. Clean an air gap if you have one. Pull off the cap and clear any debris; a clogged air gap often spits water into the sink when the dishwasher drains.
  6. Run the sink for 30 seconds (above).
  7. Clean the filter and drain area (steps below), and make sure every piece goes back exactly as it came out.
  8. Run a short cycle and watch the start. Most dishwashers pump out briefly at the start of a cycle. If you hear the pump and the water level drops, the drain path is clear.

If your drain hose is damaged so badly it can't be straightened, Samsung says to request service.

How to clean the Samsung dishwasher filter (10โ€“15 minutes)

Samsung says to keep the filter and drain area clean and clean it whenever debris builds up. That clears clogged-filter codes such as 1E (which can look like IE) and helps prevent drain errors and odors. Filter designs vary, so check your manual if your parts look different.

You'll need: gloves, a soft brush or old toothbrush, a towel, and a bowl for standing water.

  1. Turn off the dishwasher and pull out the bottom rack.
  2. Remove standing water with a cup and sponge.
  3. Twist the fine filter cylinder counterclockwise (typically a quarter turn) and lift it out. The coarse (flat) filter usually comes out with it or lifts out next.
  4. Rinse both under warm running water and scrub the mesh with a soft brush. Don't use wire brushes or scouring pads on the mesh.
  5. Clean the sump (the opening under the filter). Samsung warns there may be sharp debris here (broken glass, bone). Pick it out carefully.
  6. If your model has a removable micro filter or drain-pump cover, clean it too, following your manual.
  7. Reassemble in the reverse order and turn the fine filter clockwise until it locks. Samsung says a missing or incorrectly inserted filter part can cause drain and other errors.
  8. Run a short cycle and confirm water drains at the start.

Odor too? Samsung's cleaning guide suggests soaking removable parts such as the filter (and the drain pump, if removable on your model) overnight in distilled white vinegar. Don't use bleach in a dishwasher with a stainless steel interior, which most Samsung dishwashers have.

How to know it's fixed: the code doesn't return, there's no water left in the sump after a full cycle (a small puddle under the filter is normal on many dishwashers), and the sink or air gap doesn't overflow during the drain.

Samsung dishwasher drain codes: 5C, SC, 5E, SE, OC, LC

Samsung's US error-code guide groups these. Some models flash lights instead of showing a code; your manual has the light pattern.

CodeSamsung's meaningWhat to do
5C, SC, 5E, SEDrain errorSink and disposal, drain hose (not pinched, air gap or high loop), filter and drain area, then a test cycle
OC, 0C, oEOver-level: too much water in the tubOften the same drain problem (water can't leave), or too many suds from regular dish soap; check the drain path first
LC, LELeak sensor triggeredSamsung says the dishwasher may turn itself on and try to drain. On WaterWall models, check the reflector at the back is seated correctly
1E, IEClogged filter (WaterWall) or high-temperature heater (rotary models)Clean the filter; if the code returns on a rotary model, it's a heater fault
3CPump failedSamsung says turn the dishwasher off and try again; if it returns, request service
9ELow water supplyFill problem, not a drain problem; check the water valve under the sink

Reset after a fix, not before. Samsung's reset: unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker, wait 1 to 5 minutes, then restore power. Samsung stresses that drain codes are often caused by the drain hose installation, so a reset alone won't stick.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Turn off the breaker for the dishwasher and shut the hot-water valve under the sink. Remove standing water first. Dishwashers are hard-wired on many installs; if you're not comfortable with that, call a pro.

1. Code returns with a clean filter, clear sink, and straight hose; the pump hums or stays silent

Likely causes: a failed drain pump, a pump jammed by glass or a fruit pit, or a loose wire at the pump. Samsung lists 3C as a pump failure.

Signs: you hear a hum (or nothing) when the dishwasher should drain; the water level doesn't drop; the code comes back after every reset.

DIY difficulty: Moderate. On models with a removable pump, check for debris first. Otherwise the dishwasher has to come out or be tipped back.

Call a pro if: the dishwasher is hard-wired and you'd need to disconnect it, or it's still in year 1 (warranty).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pump (assembly)Pumps water out of the sumpModerate
Fine / coarse filterKeeps debris out of the pumpEasy

2. Pump runs, but water drains slowly or comes back

Likely causes: a clog in the sump-to-pump hose or the drain hose, a stuck check valve that lets dirty water flow back into the tub, or a clogged air gap.

Signs: you hear the pump running normally; the water level drops a little; dirty water reappears in the tub after the cycle, or the air gap overflows into the sink.

DIY difficulty: Easy for the drain hose and air gap; moderate for internal hoses and the check valve.

Call a pro if: the clog is inside the dishwasher's sump, or the hose is damaged where it can't be reached.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain hoseCarries water to the disposal or sink drainEasy
Sump-to-pump hoseConnects the sump to the pumpModerate
Check valveStops drained water from flowing backModerate

3. Over-level (OC) or leak (LC) codes with no clear clog

Likely causes: water can't leave fast enough (same causes as above), suds from regular dish soap or rinse aid overfilling, a misseated reflector on WaterWall models, or, less often, a sensor or control board fault.

Signs: the dishwasher stops mid-cycle; it may run the drain pump on its own (Samsung says that's normal for a leak-sensor trip); there's water in the base or under the unit.

DIY difficulty: Easy for suds and the reflector; advanced for sensors and boards.

Call a pro if: the leak code returns after drying the base, or you see water on the floor.

What Samsung's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per Samsung's US home-appliance warranty page:

PeriodWhat's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and labor (standard manufacturer's warranty)Samsung
Limited-timeFree 2-year extended warranty on eligible dishwashers and other appliances bought July 9 to December 31, 2026 at participating retailers; claim form required, redeemed through SmartThingsCheck your terms

What this means for a drain problem: a failed drain pump or control board in year 1 is a warranty repair. But Samsung's warranty doesn't cover improper installation, and routine maintenance such as cleaning a filter isn't a warranty repair. A pinched hose, a disposal knockout left in, a missing high loop, or a clogged filter usually isn't a defect. Samsung also says frozen water or drain lines aren't covered. Keep your proof of purchase.

โ†’ Samsung US: home-appliance warranty ยท Request service

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1, the 2026 extended offer, and any retailer or credit-card extended protection you got at purchase.
  2. Recalls: search your model at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's recall site: cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Installation: if the dishwasher is new and the problem is the hose, high loop, or disposal knockout, ask the installer to come back before you pay anyone else.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Samsung's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + installation + haul-away (+ any cabinet or countertop work if the new one won't fit the same opening)
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8โ€“15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 1-year-old Samsung dishwasher, installed last week with a new disposal, shows 5C. The disposal knockout was never removed. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair. (If you paid for installation, the installer should fix this.)

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Samsung dishwasher hums but won't drain with a clean filter and a clear sink. A tech replaces the drain pump: R = $300; N = $900; no other repairs.
300 รท 900 = 33%; life used 6 รท 11 = 55%; repeat check 33% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Samsung dishwasher needs a control board. It had a pump replaced last year for $280. R = $450; N = $900.
450 รท 900 = 50%; life used 10 รท 11 = 91%; repeat check (450 + 280) รท 900 = 81% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a control board on an older unit, a second big repair within about 2 years, rust inside the tub, or leaks from the tub itself.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, hose, check valve, or pump; the dishwasher is in year 1 (or the 2026 extended period); or it's a built-in panel-ready model where replacing means cabinet work.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go: once it has used more than half its expected life, the same repair buys fewer years.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude clogs, plumbing problems, and installation errors. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Samsung dishwasher not draining?
Samsung says to check the sink drain and garbage disposal first, then the drain hose. Right after installation, the most common cause is the dishwasher sitting on its own drain hose; the next is a hose with no air gap or high loop. After that, clean the filter and drain area and reassemble it correctly.

What does 5C or SC mean on a Samsung dishwasher?
Samsung lists 5C, SC, 5E, and SE as drain errors. OC, 0C, and oE are over-level errors, which often have the same root cause.

Should I reset my Samsung dishwasher to clear 5C?
Only after troubleshooting. Samsung's reset is to unplug the dishwasher or turn off its breaker for 1 to 5 minutes, but it says drain codes are often caused by the drain hose installation, so the code returns unless you fix the cause.

Why is there water in the bottom of my new Samsung dishwasher?
On a new install, check that the disposal knockout plug was removed and the dishwasher isn't sitting on its drain hose. A small amount of water under the filter after a cycle is normal on many dishwashers.

How do I clean a Samsung dishwasher filter?
Remove the bottom rack, twist the fine filter counterclockwise, lift it and the coarse filter out, rinse and brush them, clear the sump carefully (there may be sharp debris), and lock the filter back in clockwise. Samsung says incorrect reassembly can cause drain errors.

Does Samsung's warranty cover a dishwasher that won't drain?
A failed part in year 1 is covered for parts and labor. Installation problems, filter cleaning, and frozen lines aren't.

How much does it cost to replace a Samsung dishwasher drain pump?
OEM Samsung dishwasher drain pumps were listed at about $118 to $324 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30, depending on model. Cost guides put a pro drain-pump replacement at $100 to $400 for dishwashers in general.

Is it worth fixing a Samsung dishwasher that won't drain?
Usually yes. Most fixes are free, and a pump is a mid-priced repair. A control board on a 10-year-old dishwasher, or a second big repair within about two years, usually isn't. Use the calculator above.
