Frigidaire Freezer Not Freezing? Power, GFI Outlet, 55°F Room Limit, 0°F Setting, Door Seal (Dollar-Bill Test), Frost, Overfilling, HI Alarm, Evaporator Fan, Defrost Heater, Timer, Board — Fixes, Costs, Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
Start with Frigidaire's own checklist. Frigidaire's US support article "Freezer - Not Freezing or Not Cooling" applies to stand-alone freezers and refrigerators with freezers. Cheapest first:
- Power. Look for control-panel or interior lights. If it's on a GFI outlet, check it hasn't tripped. Frigidaire wants a dedicated, grounded 115/120 V outlet on a 15 or 20 amp breaker or time-delay fuse.
- Give it 24 hours. After a new install, a power outage, or a setting change, Frigidaire says the unit needs 24 hours to stabilize.
- Room temperature. Frigidaire doesn't recommend installing it where the room drops below 55°F (garages and porches in winter).
- Setting. Factory setting is 0°F; Frigidaire calls −6°F to 6°F acceptable.
- Door. Make sure nothing blocks it. Do the dollar-bill test: close the door on a bill and tug. You should feel resistance; if it slides out, the seal is weak. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water.
- Frost. Heavy frost can keep the door from shutting and cut airflow.
- Too full? Remove a few items. Keep food off the vents and leave space for air.
Is it trying to cool? Frigidaire says a compressor hum, fans blowing, and refrigerant gurgling all mean it's trying. If it's run 24 hours and still isn't cold, schedule service. Installed within the last 30 days? Frigidaire says to go back to your installer first.
Common failed parts behind a warm freezer: the evaporator fan, a defrost heater or defrost timer (frost-free models), the condenser fan, a temperature sensor, the control board, or the sealed system.
Our partner pro call line is coming soon. Until then: if your appliance may still be under warranty, contact the manufacturer first. Otherwise, get two or three written quotes from local appliance repair companies, and ask about the diagnostic fee and the parts-and-labor warranty.
Verdict at a glance
| Your situation | What it usually means | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Tripped GFI; garage below 55°F; just installed or after an outage (under 24 hours); setting warmer than 0°F; bill slides out of the door; freezer packed against the vents | Power, location, setting, door, or load | ✅ Free fix |
| Freezer warm, no fan sound inside; frost on the back panel that keeps returning; condenser fan stopped; gasket torn | Evaporator fan, defrost heater or timer, condenser fan, gasket | 🔧 Usually worth repairing |
| Compressor hums and fans run for 24 hours but it never gets cold; tech suspects the sealed system; freezer 12+ years old with a second big repair in about 2 years | Sealed system or repeat failures | ♻️ Lean toward replacing if the quote passes about half of a new unit |
Safety check before any DIY (30 seconds)
Stop and don't start the DIY steps below if any of these is true:
- Food safety first. Move frozen food to a cooler or another freezer while you troubleshoot.
- Unplug before removing any panel. Frigidaire's manual warns against extension cords and adapter plugs.
- Flammable refrigerant on many newer models. Frigidaire's manual says don't use mechanical devices to speed defrosting, don't puncture refrigerant tubing, and leave repairs to trained service personnel.
- Burning smell, sparking, or a tripped breaker that trips again. Leave it unplugged and call a pro.
- Sealed system: a refrigerant leak or compressor is licensed work.
- Installed in the last 30 days? Frigidaire says contact your installer.
- Still under warranty (year 1)? Schedule Frigidaire service before you open panels.
- Recall check: search your model on the CPSC recall site before paying for a repair (see "Recalls" below).
If none of these apply, the free checks below are safe for most owners.

Which Frigidaire freezer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the serial plate inside the unit. Frigidaire's manual says not to remove it. It matters a lot here, because a manual-defrost chest freezer and a frost-free upright fail in different ways.
| Type | Model prefix (examples) | Defrost | Usual "won't freeze" parts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upright freezer | Often FFFU (check label) | Frost-free on many; manual on some | Evaporator fan, defrost heater, timer or board, condenser fan |
| Chest freezer | Check label | Manual defrost on most | Door seal, too much frost (defrost by hand), temperature control, sealed system |
| Top-freezer refrigerator | Often FFTR (check label) | Frost-free | Evaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost timer |
| Side-by-side / French-door / bottom-freezer refrigerator | Often FRSS / FRFS / FFHB (check label) | Frost-free, electronic control | Fans, defrost, sensor, control board |
Prefixes are examples, not a full list. "Gallery" and "Professional" are Frigidaire product lines; the same checks apply.
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Lights on? If not, check the GFI outlet and breaker.
- Thermometer: put one between frozen packages overnight. Frigidaire's acceptable range is −6°F to 6°F.
- Listen: compressor hum and fans mean it's trying to cool (Frigidaire).
- Dollar-bill test at several points around the door.
- Look for frost: heavy frost on the walls or back panel points to a door that doesn't seal, or (on frost-free models) the defrost system.
- Vents: move food off them; take a few items out of a packed freezer.
- Display: on electronic models, HI means a high temperature has lasted over an hour; PF means a power failure (see the code table).
How to know it's fixed: 24 hours later the thermometer reads near 0°F and food is frozen hard.
What Frigidaire says vs. what Frigidaire says (setting and frost)
Frigidaire's own support articles give slightly different targets:
| Frigidaire: "Freezer - Not Freezing or Not Cooling" | Frigidaire: "Freezer Too Cold" | Frigidaire: "Refrigerators / Freezer - Frost Build Up" | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freezer setting | Factory setting 0°F; −6°F to 6°F is acceptable | Set to 0°F or lower | Setting below the recommended 0°F can over-freeze food and cause frost |
| When to wait | 24 hours to stabilize after install, outage, or change | 24 hours after a change | — |
| Frost | Over-frosting can stop the door shutting and cut airflow | — | Causes: warped gasket or door, an ice chute flap not closing, very low settings, blocked airflow |
Our take: set 0°F. Going far colder doesn't fix a fan or defrost problem, and Frigidaire's frost article says it can add frost. On a side-by-side with a door dispenser, check the ice chute flap closes; Frigidaire lists it as a frost source.
Not from Frigidaire: Fixr, a cost-guide site, says to clean refrigerator coils at least twice a year. Frigidaire's freezer checklist doesn't mention coils; follow your Use & Care manual.
Frigidaire freezer codes, alarms, and signs
| Display or sign | Frigidaire's explanation | First fix (free) | If it continues | DIY tier |

Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the freezer. Move food to a cooler. Have towels ready for melting frost.
1. Freezer warm and silent inside
Likely cause: a failed or frozen evaporator fan motor on a frost-free model. Defrost first; if the fan still won't run, replace it.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator fan motor | Moves cold air across the evaporator into the freezer | Advanced |
2. Frost on the back panel keeps coming back
Likely cause: the defrost system: a failed defrost heater, a stuck defrost timer on older mechanical models, or the board that runs defrost. Frigidaire's manual says a normal defrost lasts about 30 minutes, and a red glow in the vents during defrost is normal.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Defrost heater | Melts frost off the evaporator | Advanced |
| Defrost timer (older models) | Switches between cooling and defrost | Advanced |
3. Back of the unit hot, condenser fan not turning
Likely cause: a failed condenser fan motor (on models that have one), which cools the compressor and condenser.
DIY difficulty: Advanced.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Condenser fan motor | Cools the compressor and condenser | Advanced |
4. Door fails the dollar-bill test
Likely cause: a torn, flattened, or warped door gasket, or a door out of alignment. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water first (Frigidaire).
DIY difficulty: Moderate.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer door gasket | Seals the door | Moderate |
5. Temperatures drift with a running fan and no frost
Likely cause: a temperature sensor reading wrong, or the control board. Frigidaire's manual says to call service for a digital display error.
DIY difficulty: Advanced → Pro only.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature sensor | Tells the board the compartment temperature | Advanced |
| Control board | Runs the compressor, fans, and defrost | Pro only |

Recalls
We searched the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. We didn't find a Frigidaire recall for freezers that won't freeze. The Frigidaire refrigerator recalls we found involve ice makers, which matter if your freezer has one:
- June 2, 2022 (22-143): about 367,500 Frigidaire and Electrolux side-by-side, top-freezer, and multi-door refrigerators. The ice maker's ice level detector arm can break into the ice bucket (choking hazard). Models include FRSS2323A_, FRSS2333AS, FRSS2623A_, FRSS2633AS, FRSS26L3AF, FFHI1835VS, PRMC2285AF, and Electrolux ERMC2295AS, in set serial ranges. Remedy: stop using the ice maker and get a free replacement ice maker (Electrolux 833-840-5926).
- February 8, 2024 (24-110): about 383,240 Frigidaire side-by-side refrigerators made 2015–2019 with Slim Ice buckets (including FGSS2635T_, FGSC2335T_, FFSC2323TS, FPSC2277RF, FPSS2677RF, and others). An ice bucket part can break into the ice. Remedy: stop using the ice maker and get a free replacement component (Electrolux 888-377-7563).
CPSC also lists Frigidaire mini-fridge recalls (2025 and 2026). Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
Prevent it next time
- Keep the room at 55°F or warmer (Frigidaire); a cold garage can stop a freezer from cycling properly.
- Don't overfill; keep food off the vents.
- Check the seal with the dollar-bill test a couple of times a year, and clean the gasket.
- Defrost a manual-defrost chest freezer before the frost gets thick; use no sharp tools.
- Keep the setting at 0°F; much colder can add frost (Frigidaire).

What Frigidaire's warranty covers
Per the limited warranty printed in Frigidaire Use & Care manual A21785802 (April 2021; see Sources). Terms vary by model and year, so check your own manual:
| Period (from original purchase) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Electrolux pays all costs to repair or replace any part that proves defective in materials or workmanship | Frigidaire / Electrolux |
| After year 1 | Not covered under that manual's warranty. Some older Frigidaire manuals list an extra limited 2nd–5th-year warranty on the sealed refrigeration system. Check your manual | Depends on your manual |
What this means for a freezer that won't freeze: a failed fan, defrost part, sensor, or board in year 1 is covered. The warranty doesn't cover service calls without a defect, correcting installation, instruction, food loss, or damage from inadequate power supply. Keep your receipt.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check
- Warranty: year 1; check your manual for sealed-system years; check retailer or credit-card extended protection.
- Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls (ice maker recalls above).
- Free fixes done: power and GFI, 24 hours, room 55°F+, 0°F, dollar-bill test, frost, load.
- Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and which part tested bad.
What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)
How we price this table: DIY part prices are Frigidaire / Electrolux-family part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages for "frigidaire refrigerator …" and "frigidaire freezer …" searches (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping. Whirlpool, GE, LG, Samsung, Crosley-, Kenmore-, and White-Westinghouse-labeled listings, refurbished parts, grommets, brackets, covers, and filters in the same results were excluded. Sears showed no listings for "frigidaire refrigerator defrost thermostat," "start relay," or "relay," so those parts have no price here. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for refrigerators and freezers in general, not Frigidaire-specific quotes. "Varies — get a quote" means neither guide itemizes that repair.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new unit cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is it, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 13 years, Fixr's refrigerator average, inside HomeGuide's 10–20-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.
Stand-alone freezers cost less than refrigerators, so the 50% line arrives sooner. A sealed-system repair on an upright or chest freezer often crosses it.
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A Frigidaire upright in a garage stops freezing in January. The garage is 40°F, below Frigidaire's 55°F minimum. You move it indoors. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Frigidaire side-by-side has frost on the freezer back panel and soft ice cream. A tech replaces the defrost heater: R = $280; N = $1,600.
280 ÷ 1,600 = 18%; life used 6 ÷ 13 = 46% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Frigidaire upright freezer hums for 24 hours but stays warm; the tech quotes a sealed-system repair: R = $550; N = $950.
550 ÷ 950 = 58% (inside the 50–60% second-quote zone); life used 10 ÷ 13 = 77% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a sealed-system repair on an older unit, a stand-alone freezer near the end of its life, or repeat failures.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, defrost part, timer, sensor, or gasket; the unit is under about 8 years old; or it's covered.
Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb; Fixr says never spend more than half the price of a new model on repairs. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of new, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you check the evaporator fan, defrost heater, and timer or board?
- If it's the sealed system, is any of it still under warranty?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: plans often exclude food loss, stand-alone freezers in garages, refrigerant recharges, and pre-existing problems.
FAQ
Why is my Frigidaire freezer not freezing?
Frigidaire's checklist: no power or a tripped GFI, less than 24 hours since install or an outage, a room below 55°F, a setting warmer than 0°F, a door that doesn't seal, heavy frost, or a freezer packed against the vents.
What temperature should a Frigidaire freezer be?
Frigidaire's factory setting is 0°F; it calls −6°F to 6°F acceptable.
Can a Frigidaire freezer work in a garage?
Frigidaire doesn't recommend installing it where the temperature drops below 55°F.
How do I test my Frigidaire freezer door seal?
Close the door on a dollar bill and tug. You should feel resistance. If it slides out, the seal is weak; clean the gasket with warm soapy water, and replace it if it's torn.
My Frigidaire freezer hums but isn't cold. What now?
Frigidaire says hum, fans, and gurgling mean it's trying to cool. If it's been running 24 hours and still isn't cold, schedule service.
How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire freezer?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Frigidaire evaporator fan motors listed at about $49 to $190 and defrost heaters at about $54 to $253. Fixr puts freezer diagnosis and repair at $100 to $250.
