Quick answer

Most Frigidaire "not cleaning" problems are cycle, loading, detergent, water, or a dirty glass trap, not a broken part. Frigidaire's own "Dishwasher - Not Cleaning" checklist and Use & Care guide, in order:

  1. Cycle: Rinse won't clean dishes. Quick Wash and 30-minute cycles may not clean heavily soiled loads. Choose a longer cycle; add Hi-Temp Wash on models that have it.
  2. Loading: load so spray arms turn freely (spin them by hand to check) and large items don't block the detergent dispenser. Don't nest items.
  3. Detergent: use fresh automatic-dishwasher detergent, dosed for your water hardness, and don't exceed the fill lines. Detergent left in the cup usually means something blocked the dispenser.
  4. Hot water and pressure: water entering the dishwasher should be at least 120°F; run the nearest hot faucet before you start. Pressure should be 20–120 psi.
  5. Clean it: debris in the filter, glass trap, and spray arms causes blockages. Clean them, then run an empty cycle on the highest heat setting. An i40 code means a clogged filter or sump.
  6. Rinse aid for spots and film.

If it still won't clean, Frigidaire says go back to your installer if it was installed within the past 30 days; after that, schedule service.

Repair or replace? Free fixes solve most cases. A spray arm or glass trap is cheap; a circulation pump or wash motor on an older dishwasher is the main "think about replacing" case.

Which Frigidaire dishwasher do you have?

Your serial label is on the inside edge of the tub or door frame (one Frigidaire guide shows it on the right side); it has the model number you need for parts and warranty checks.

FeatureWhat to look forWhy it matters here
Glass trap in a self-cleaning filterA small trap in the center, under the lower wash armEmpty it regularly; Frigidaire's Quick Care guide says monthly
Cylinder fine filter + coarse filterA round filter in the tub floor with a flat coarse filter around itTwist out and rinse; flush the coarse filter
SmartBoost Clean (newer models)A separate spray that hits the detergent compartmentFrigidaire says it helps detergent dissolve faster, reducing residue
Hi-Temp Wash / Sanitize optionsButtons on the consoleHi-Temp heats main-wash water to about 140°F; Sanitize raises the final rinse to 156°F

Not all cycles and options are on all models; your Use & Care guide lists yours.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Cycle. Don't rely on Rinse, Quick Wash, or 30-minute cycles for heavy soil; Frigidaire's guide says to choose another cycle for longer washing time.
  2. Water temperature. Run the hot faucet nearest the dishwasher for several minutes, then hold a candy or meat thermometer in the stream. Frigidaire wants at least 120°F. If it's lower, have a qualified person raise the water heater setting. Run the hot tap before every cycle.
  3. Water pressure. 20–120 psi. Frigidaire notes pressure can drop while laundry or showers run; wait until water use is lower.
  4. Detergent. Fresh automatic-dishwasher detergent only. Frigidaire's support article says it doesn't recommend detergent over a year old, and to discard detergent that's moist or caked. Try a different brand if it still won't dissolve.
  5. Loading. Spin each spray arm by hand after loading. Keep large items along the edges and off the dispenser door. Silverware: mix some up and some down; Frigidaire says water can't reach nested items.
  6. Glass trap, filter, spray arms. Empty and rinse (steps below), then run an empty cycle on the highest heat setting.
  7. Rinse aid. Fill it; if spotting continues, turn the dial to a higher number.

How to know it's fixed: a normal mixed load comes out clean on a full cycle, with no grit, film, or detergent left in the cup.

Water temperature, pressure, and the right cycle

Frigidaire says hot water activates dishwasher detergent and melts fatty food soils.

Detergent and rinse aid

Frigidaire's detergent rules:

How much powder or gel? It depends on your model. Two Frigidaire sources give different charts:

Water hardness (grains per gallon)Frigidaire support article (SmartBoost Clean models)Older Use & Care guide (two-cup dispenser, Normal / Heavy cycles)
Soft (0–3)4 teaspoons (first line)2 teaspoons in each cup
Medium (4–8)6 teaspoons (second line)5 teaspoons in each cup
Hard (9–12)8 teaspoons8 teaspoons, each cup full
Very hard (over 12)—Each cup full; water softener recommended; 1 teaspoon per grain above 12

Follow the chart in your Use & Care guide. Your water company, a water-softener company, or your county extension agent can tell you your hardness.

Rinse aid: Frigidaire says it greatly improves drying and reduces water spots. Turn the cap a quarter turn counterclockwise, fill to the line, and wipe up spills (they cause foam). If spotting continues, turn the dial higher. The dispenser holds enough for about 35–140 washes, depending on the setting.

Glass trap, filters, and spray arms

Glass trap (self-cleaning filter models): it catches broken glass, straws, bones, and pits.

  1. Grasp the trap handle and rotate it 90° clockwise while pressing down on the center of the wash arm.
  2. Lift the arm and trap assembly out; tip it over a container and tap it empty (or slide the trap out of the assembly).
  3. Put it back, press down on the arm center, and rotate the handle 90° counterclockwise. Make sure the arm and trap are fully snapped in to avoid damage.

Cylinder filter models: turn the fine filter counterclockwise, lift it out, and rinse (a sponge or bottle brush helps); then lift out and flush the coarse filter.

Spray arms: Frigidaire's "Not Cleaning" article lists them with the filter and trap as places debris causes blockages. Make sure nothing in the racks or silverware basket pokes through and stops them turning.

Overfill protector (left front corner of the tub, on the model we checked): it should move up and down about an inch. If it sticks, lift and clean underneath; Frigidaire lists it under "Dishwasher won't fill."

Spots, film, and etching

Frigidaire's "Removing Spots and Film" method for hard-water buildup:

  1. Load clean dishes and glasses as usual, no metal utensils or silverware.
  2. No detergent.
  3. Select Normal Wash and start.
  4. When it starts the second water fill (about 8 minutes), open the door and pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom.
  5. Close the door and let it finish.

Etching looks like film but can't be removed. Frigidaire says it comes from too much detergent, especially in soft or softened water; use less, and choose lower-temperature options.

Tub stains: tomato-based soils can leave a pink or orange tint that Frigidaire says doesn't affect performance and fades over time.

What Frigidaire's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per the Major Appliance Warranty in the Frigidaire/Electrolux US dishwasher Use & Care guide (see Sources):

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Repairing or replacing any part that proves defective in materials or workmanship, when installed, used, and maintained per the instructionsElectrolux (Frigidaire)

What this means for a dishwasher that doesn't clean: in year 1, a failed pump, arm, valve, element, or dispenser is covered. The warranty doesn't cover service calls that don't involve a defect, calls to correct the installation or to instruct you how to use the appliance (cycle choice, loading, detergent, cleaning the trap), or products used commercially. Frigidaire's support pages also say that within 30 days of installation, go back to your installer first. Keep your receipt to prove the purchase date. Terms can differ by model; check your own guide.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1; installer within 30 days; retailer or credit-card extended protection.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.
  3. Free fixes done: cycle, loading, detergent and dosing, 120°F water, pressure, glass trap and filter, spray arms, rinse aid, vinegar cycle.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee separately, and whether the tech checked water temperature and the trap before quoting a part.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Frigidaire's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 10 years, inside HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Frigidaire dishwasher leaves food on Quick Wash. Switching to Normal with Hi-Temp Wash and emptying the glass trap fixed it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Frigidaire dishwasher leaves detergent in the cup even with nothing blocking it; you replace the dispenser yourself: R = $70; N = $750.
70 ÷ 750 = 9%; life used 6 ÷ 10 = 60%; repeat check 9% → Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old Frigidaire dishwasher has weak spray; the tech quotes a pump-and-motor assembly: R = $450; N = $750. It had a $160 inlet valve last year.
450 ÷ 750 = 60%; life used 11 ÷ 10 = 110%; repeat check (450 + 160) ÷ 750 = 81% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a pump and motor on a dishwasher past about 10 years, a leaking tub, or repeated repairs.
Tips toward repairing: it's cycle, detergent, trap, arms, or a dispenser; the dishwasher is under about 8 years old; or it's in year 1.

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by water quality or maintenance, and a dishwasher that's already failing is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my Frigidaire dishwasher not cleaning?
Frigidaire's checklist: don't use Rinse, Quick Wash, or 30-minute cycles for heavy soil; load so arms turn and the dispenser opens; use fresh detergent in the right amount; and clean the filter, glass trap, and spray arms, then run an empty cycle on the highest heat setting. Water should be at least 120°F at 20 to 120 psi.

What does i40 mean on a Frigidaire dishwasher?
Frigidaire says i40 means a clogged filter or sump from built-up food soils. Clean the glass trap and filter and run it again.

Why is detergent left in my Frigidaire dishwasher's cup?
Frigidaire says something may have blocked the dispenser or the spray reaching it, the detergent may be old, or the cycle didn't finish. It doesn't recommend detergent over a year old.

How do I get rid of cloudy film in my Frigidaire dishwasher?
Frigidaire's method: load clean dishes with no metal, no detergent, run Normal Wash, and pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom when the second fill starts (about 8 minutes in). If the film won't come off, it may be etching from too much detergent in soft water.

How much detergent should I use in a Frigidaire dishwasher?
One tablet or pack, or powder by water hardness. Frigidaire's charts differ by model, from 2 to 8 teaspoons per cup, so follow your Use & Care guide.

How often should I clean the Frigidaire glass trap?
Frigidaire's Quick Care guide says monthly.

How much does it cost to fix a Frigidaire dishwasher that doesn't clean?
Often nothing. Fixr puts residue-on-dishes repairs at $50 to $300. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, Frigidaire spray arms were listed at about $20 to $50 and circulation pumps at about $186 to $359.
