Quick answer

Most Bosch "not cleaning" complaints are fixed for free. Bosch's own self-help list, in order:

  1. Clean the filter. Bosch filters have three parts (coarse, fine, and micro). Twist the cylinder out counterclockwise, wash all three under running water with mild soap and a soft brush, and lock it back in with the arrows lined up. Bosch's Quick Start Guide says clean it every 2 months; its E22 code means the filter is blocked.
  2. Load so water can reach everything. Leave space between items, face the insides of bowls and pans toward the spray arms, avoid nesting, and make sure nothing hangs down and blocks a spray arm. Push the top rack all the way back so its spray arm connects to the water supply.
  3. Scrape, don't pre-rinse. Bosch says its detergent needs small food debris to work on; just scrape off big scraps and bones.
  4. Check your water temperature. Bosch recommends setting the water heater to 120–125°F. Its cycle times are based on 120°F supply water. Run the hot tap at the nearest sink before you start.
  5. Clean the spray arms and nozzles. Spin each arm by hand to check it moves; clear blocked nozzles with a toothpick. Bosch notes limescale can block nozzles.
  6. Fix detergent and rinse aid. Use dishwasher detergent only, adjusted for your water hardness, and keep the rinse aid dispenser full.

If those don't fix it, the usual failed parts are a cracked or stuck spray arm, a failed detergent dispenser (Bosch code E19 is the dispenser solenoid circuit), a failing circulation pump with built-in heater (Bosch calls it the "heat pump"; codes E09, E20, E21), or limescale in that pump (E12: descale).

Repair or replace? Free fixes and a spray arm are cheap. A circulation pump with heater on an older Bosch is the main "think about replacing" repair. See the calculator below.

Cleaning the filter and spray arms is normal owner care. Bosch's manual warns that debris may be sharp (broken glass), and the water in the bottom may be hot right after a cycle. Let it cool first.

Which Bosch dishwasher do you have?

Bosch puts the model and serial number on a label on the edge of the dishwasher door. You need both to order the right filter, spray arm, or pump.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Pull and clean the filter. Twist the filter cylinder counterclockwise, lift it out, separate the coarse, fine, and micro filters, and wash them under running water with mild soap and a soft brush. Reinstall in reverse order and make sure the arrows face each other once it's locked. Bosch's manual says check the filters for residue after each cycle; the Quick Start Guide says clean every 2 months.
  2. Spin the spray arms. Turn each arm by hand before a cycle. If one rubs on a pot handle, a tall utensil, or something hanging through the rack, reload. Push the top rack fully back so its arm connects to the water supply at the back of the tub.
  3. Clean the spray arms. Bosch's manual has you unscrew the arms and inspect them; clear each nozzle with a toothpick and rinse the arm under the tap. Check for grease and limescale.
  4. Check water temperature. Bosch recommends 120–125°F at the water heater; higher than that and, per Bosch's Quick Start Guide, the detergent may not activate properly. Run the hot tap at the nearest sink until it's hot before you start.
  5. Check detergent and loading habits. Use dishwasher-only detergent (never hand-dish soap). Bosch's manual says 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cleans most loads in soft water; heavy soil or hard water may need 1.75–3 tablespoons depending on the cycle. Don't pre-rinse; scrape.
  6. Check rinse aid. If the "Add Rinse Aid" light is on, refill. If you see streaks or residue, Bosch says adjust the rinse-aid setting (r:00 to r:06 on many models) for your water hardness.
  7. Run a cleaning cycle. For grease or limescale, Bosch's manual says put detergent in the dispenser and run the cycle with the highest rinse temperature with no dishes. For E12 (limescale in the heat pump), use a dishwasher descaler and, if your model has a water softener, softening salt.

How to know it's fixed: a normal mixed load comes out with no food bits, no grit in cups, and no gritty film on the bottom of glasses; the spray arms spin freely; and no code returns over the next few cycles.

Code meanings from Bosch's US "Bosch Dishwasher Error Codes" page (source 1), checked directly 2026-10-30. The open ApplianceDB sample (source 12) maps Samsung and LG codes to components, ranked fixes, and DIY difficulty; it has no Bosch entries, so we used Bosch's own page for every code here. Codes vary by model; your owner's manual has the final list.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Switch off the dishwasher's breaker. Let the water and heater cool. Wear gloves when you reach into the sump; Bosch warns debris may be sharp.

1. Food bits or grit left on dishes, especially the top rack

Likely causes: a clogged filter (dirty water is recirculated), a blocked or stuck spray arm, or nozzles plugged with food or limescale.

Signs: grit in cups, bits on glasses, debris sitting in the filter; a spray arm you can't spin freely; E22.

DIY difficulty: Easy (filter, arm cleaning); Easy–Moderate (new spray arm).

Call a pro if: the arms spin and the filter is clean but water pressure still seems weak; the circulation pump may be failing.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Filter (coarse / fine / micro)Catches food so it isn't sprayed back onto dishesEasy
Lower / middle / upper spray armSprays wash water over each rackEasy–Moderate

2. White film, cloudy glasses, streaks, or spots

Likely causes: hard water and limescale (nozzles and the heat pump), the wrong detergent amount for your water hardness, empty rinse aid, or a rinse-aid setting that's too low or too high. Too much detergent in soft water can etch glass, and Bosch warns against overdosing in soft water.

Signs: chalky film that wipes off (scale or detergent); streaks (rinse-aid setting); tub stains; E12.

DIY difficulty: Easy.

What to do: adjust detergent to Bosch's table for your water hardness; fill rinse aid and adjust its setting; descale with a dishwasher descaler; use softening salt if your model has a softener. For hard-water tub stains, Bosch's manual suggests a cup of concentrated lemon juice on the top rack partway through a Normal cycle.

3. Detergent pod or powder still in the dispenser after the cycle

Likely causes: something blocking the dispenser door (a tall item or a tray), a tab that touches the cover, or a failed dispenser actuator / solenoid (Bosch E19).

Signs: the cup door is closed or half-open at the end of the cycle; clumped detergent; E19 after a reset.

DIY difficulty: Easy (loading); Advanced (dispenser replacement means removing the inner door panel).

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Detergent dispenser assemblyHolds detergent and opens on cueAdvanced
Dispenser actuator / seal / coverOpens the cup; keeps detergent dryAdvanced

4. Dishes come out cool, greasy, or poorly washed; E09, E20, E21, E01, or E04

Likely causes: the circulation pump with built-in heater (Bosch calls it the heat pump) isn't heating or isn't moving enough water, or its control circuit has failed. Limescale (E12) can lead here if it's ignored.

Signs: water doesn't feel hot during the wash; heavy grease left on dishes; the cycle runs very long; heat-pump codes return after a 30-second breaker reset.

DIY difficulty: Pro only.

5. Too little water, dishes dirty and dry-looking; E16, E17, or E18

Likely causes: the water supply valve under the sink is partly closed, the inlet hose is kinked, or the water inlet valve is failing.

Signs: low water at the bottom mid-wash; filling sounds that stop early; E16–E18.

DIY difficulty: Easy (supply valve, kinks); Pro only (inlet valve; plumbing behind the kick plate).

What Bosch's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per Bosch's US warranty information page and the warranty statement in Bosch's US Use and Care Manual (see Sources):

Period (from purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Entire appliance, parts and laborBosch
Years 2–5Electronics (microprocessor or printed circuit board), parts only; racks (not rack components), parts onlyYou pay labor
LifetimeRust-through of the inner tub liner and stainless-steel door, parts onlyYou pay labor

What this means for a dishwasher that won't clean: in year 1, a failed spray arm, dispenser, or circulation pump is covered. After year 1, the pump, spray arms, and dispenser aren't on the extended list, but a control module is, parts-only, through year 5. Bosch's manual says cleaning and maintenance aren't covered and a charge applies if a service visit finds the problem was a clogged filter or similar. Bosch also excludes failure to maintain, correction of installation problems, resetting breakers or fuses, and unauthorized or self-performed repairs beyond normal care. Keep proof of purchase.

Before you pay for any repair: a 4-point check

  1. Warranty: year 1 covers everything; years 2–5 cover electronics parts; check retailer or credit-card extended protection too.
  2. Recalls: search your model at cpsc.gov/Recalls. A recall repair is free.
  3. Free fixes done: filter, spray arms, loading, water temperature, detergent and rinse aid, an empty hot cleaning cycle. A paid visit that ends in "the filter was clogged" isn't covered even in warranty.
  4. Written quote: ask for part, labor, and trip fee as separate lines, and ask the tech to name the code or test that pointed at the part.

What it costs: repair parts and pro service (2026)

How we price this table: DIY part prices are Bosch part numbers listed on Sears PartsDirect public search pages (S-list under Sources), USD before tax and shipping; ranges span several part numbers because the right part depends on your model number. Pro costs tagged [GUIDE] come from two US cost guides (Fixr = G1, HomeGuide = G2): national averages for dishwashers in general unless marked brand-specific, not Bosch quotes. Tip: before paying for a pump, run the free fixes and a descaling cycle. Bosch's E12 note says limescale builds up quickly in hard-water areas.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? → R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything Bosch's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? → N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use about 11 years, near the middle of HomeGuide's 8–15-year range, if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? → Past

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
Step C — Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) ÷ N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, treat it like the bottom-right box: money keeps going into the same machine. And if the part is no longer available for your model, that decides it: replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 2-year-old Bosch 300 Series leaves grit in cups. The filter is packed and the top rack wasn't pushed all the way in. Cleaning and reloading fixes it. R = $0.
→ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old Bosch has a cracked lower spray arm. The owner buys the part and swaps it: R = $40; N = $1,100; no other repairs.
40 ÷ 1,100 = 4%; life used 6 ÷ 11 = 55%; repeat check 4% → Repair (top-right box: usually fine).

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old Bosch shows E09; a tech quotes a circulation pump with heater at R = $550, and last year it needed a control module for $300. N = $1,100.
550 ÷ 1,100 = 50%; life used 10 ÷ 11 = 91%; repeat check (550 + 300) ÷ 1,100 = 77% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a pump or control on a dishwasher 10+ years old, a second big repair within about 2 years.
Tips toward repairing: it's a filter, spray arm, dispenser, or inlet valve; the dishwasher is under about 6 years old; it's in year 1; or the failed part is a control module in years 2–5 (parts covered).

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb, and the one we use. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50–60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace. The older the dishwasher, the lower the line should go.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude problems caused by hard water, limescale, or lack of maintenance. A dishwasher that's already broken is usually not covered. Bosch also offers an appliance service plan when you register a new product.

FAQ

Why is my Bosch dishwasher not cleaning dishes?
Bosch's own list: a dirty filter, loading that blocks the spray arms, pre-rinsing (detergent needs some food debris), no rinse aid, and clogged spray-arm nozzles. Bosch also recommends a water heater setting of 120–125°F.

How do I clean the filter on a Bosch dishwasher?
Twist the filter cylinder counterclockwise and lift it out, separate the coarse, fine, and micro filters, wash them under running water with mild soap and a soft brush, then reinstall so the arrows line up.

How often should I clean my Bosch dishwasher filter?
Bosch's Quick Start Guide says every 2 months; its manual says check it for residue after each cycle.

Why are my Bosch dishes gritty?
Usually a clogged filter recirculating food, or a spray arm that's blocked or has plugged nozzles. Clean both and reload so nothing blocks the arms.

Why do my glasses have a white film?
Usually hard water, too much or too little detergent for your water hardness, or empty rinse aid. Bosch says adjust detergent to your water hardness, set the rinse-aid dispenser, and descale in hard-water areas.

What does E22 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
The filter is blocked. Remove it and wash it under running water with mild soap and a soft brush.

What does E12 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
Limescale has built up in the heat pump. Bosch says descale the dishwasher and use softening salt if your model has a water softener.

What does E09 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
A heat pump internal heater fault. Bosch says reset the breaker for 30 seconds and call support at 1-800-944-2904 if it returns.

Should I pre-rinse dishes for my Bosch?
No. Bosch says scrape off food scraps only; its detergent needs small food debris to work.

How much does it cost to fix a Bosch dishwasher that isn't cleaning?
Often nothing: most cases are the filter, loading, or water temperature. Bosch spray arms were about $20 to $110 on Sears PartsDirect when we checked on 2026-10-30. Circulation pumps with heater ran about $151 to $383 for the part. Fixr puts Bosch dishwasher repairs at $50 to $450.
