Is your appliance worth fixing, or is it time to replace it?

Plain-English troubleshooting for refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers: the quick checks to try first, the part that usually fails, what a repair really costs, and how to find someone to fix it.

How we help you decide

  1. Try the free fixes first. Many "broken" appliances are a setting, a clogged filter, or a tripped breaker. Every guide starts with 5-minute checks.
  2. Match the symptom to the likely part. We list the parts that most often cause each symptom, how hard they are to replace, and when it's a job for a pro.
  3. Compare repair vs. replace. We use the 50% rule: if a repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance and the appliance is past the middle of its expected life, replacing usually wins.
  4. Get it fixed. Use the manufacturer if you're under warranty, order the part yourself, or call a partner pro line that connects you with an independent repair provider near you.

The 50% rule in one line

Repair cost ÷ new-appliance cost > 50%, and age ÷ expected life > 50% → replace. Otherwise, repair is usually the better deal.

Repair-or-replace guides

Freezer cold but fridge warm? Demo mode, iced evaporator, or a failed fan. Checks, parts, costs, and who fixes it.

Electric or gas? Breaker, vent, and Flow Sense checks, then element, thermal fuse, or gas igniter. Costs and when to call a pro.

Freezer temperature, Ice Off, the test button, and the French-door freeze-up. When a new ice maker beats a new fridge.

4C, 5C, UB codes decoded: pump filter, drain hose, and load balance first, then the drain pump. Costs and verdict.

OE won't-drain fix: clean the drain pump filter, check the hose and house drain, run the Spin Only pump test.

Samsung dryer not heating

30-second heat check, both breaker halves, Eco Dry, and the vent blockage test (CLg / C80 / C90). Then element, fuse, or gas parts.

Buzz, rattle, grind, or click? Match the sound to the part with Samsung's noise guide, then fan, ice maker, or compressor costs.

UE / Ub unbalanced load: redistribute, level, check shipping bolts, and run LG's empty Rinse & Spin test.

Samsung washer leaking

Leak-location map: hoses, door boot, drain hose depth, pump filter, suds, and 1E / LE / LC codes. Costs and verdict.
