Quick answer

Start with the free causes, because they're common:

  1. Display (Demo) Mode. If the panel shows O F F, LG says all cooling is disabled. It takes a button combination to fix (below).
  2. Settings, airflow, or doors. LG recommends 34–37 °F for the fridge, keeping it no more than 70% full, clear vents, and doors that close fully.
  3. Ice on the evaporator or a dead fan. Codes like FF, rF, dH, or dS point to a fan or defrost fault. These are usually affordable repairs.

If none of those apply and both sections are warm, the problem may be the sealed system. Many LG French-door and side-by-side models use a linear (or inverter linear) compressor. When it fails, or the refrigerant leaks (LG's Er CL / Er CH codes), the repair is pro-only. It needs an EPA Section 608-certified technician to braze lines and recharge refrigerant.

Know your warranty before you pay. LG's US refrigerator warranty covers the sealed system parts and labor for 5 years, and the linear/inverter compressor part only for years 6–10. You pay the labor in years 6–10, and on a compressor job, labor plus refrigerant is often the bulk of the bill.

Repair or replace? Fans, sensors, and defrost parts: repair. A compressor or sealed-system repair on a fridge that's out of warranty or past ~8–10 years: replacing usually wins. Use the calculator below.

Which LG fridge do you have?

Find your model and serial number on the label inside the fridge compartment (usually on a side wall). The serial number tells you the build year, which matters for the warranty and for which Display Mode steps to use.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Turn off Display Mode (OFF on the panel). LG says Display/Demo Mode keeps the lights and panel on but disables cooling in both sections.
    • 2019 and newer (serial number starts with 901 or higher): open either fridge door, press and hold Ice Plus + Refrigerator until you hear a beep, then keep holding Refrigerator and press Ice Plus 3 times. The panel beeps and shows temperatures.
    • 2018 and older: open the right fridge door and hold Refrigerator + Ice Plus for 5 seconds until a second beep.
    • Some models label the second button Express Frz instead of Ice Plus. Button names vary by model.
  2. Check the settings. LG recommends 34–37 °F (1–3 °C) for the fridge. A display set to 41 °F or 43 °F won't feel cold. If the panel is locked, hold Lock/Unlock for 3 seconds before adjusting.
  3. Unpack the vents. Keep the fridge no more than 70% full and move anything blocking the air vents at the back of the fridge or in the freezer.
  4. Close the doors properly. Check that shelves and bins are installed correctly and nothing sticks out. LG's own gasket test: close a sheet of paper in the door; it should resist when you pull it.
  5. Clean the condenser area. Unplug the fridge, remove the lower rear cover if your manual allows, and vacuum dust from the coils and the condenser fan. Make sure the fan blade isn't blocked.
  6. Power-cycle it. Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug it back in, directly into a wall outlet (no power strips).
  7. Give it time after install or repair. LG says a newly installed or repaired fridge can take 2–3 days to reach normal temperature, depending on how much food is in it.

Food safety: The USDA says a closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours without cooling. Throw out perishable food that has been above 40 °F for more than 2 hours. Source: FoodSafety.gov.

LG refrigerator error codes that point to "not cooling"

LG's US error-code guide lists these (codes may appear with an E, r, or Er prefix depending on the model). On many models you can recall a code by holding Freezer Temperature + Express Frz for 3 seconds.

Er CH (CH E, E CH)Refrigerant leak, high side; or a compressor/valve/blockage problemSealed systemPro only

Er CL / Er CH in plain English: LG says these codes mean the fridge detected insufficient cooling or abnormal temperatures, and lists causes including low refrigerant or a leak, a compressor or valve problem, or a blockage in the sealed system. It can also be triggered by a door left open a long time. LG's steps are to close the doors and wait, then unplug for 5 minutes. If it persists, request service. After a repair, LG says the code can show until the freezer drops below 14 °F, so allow about 24 hours.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the fridge first. The compressor, refrigerant lines, and sealed system are pro-only: the EPA requires Section 608 certification to handle refrigerant. Don't puncture or cut any tubing.

1. Freezer cold, fridge warm (or FF / rF / dH / dS codes)

Likely cause: frost on the evaporator blocking airflow, or a failed fan.

Signs: frost on the freezer's back panel, fan buzzing or ticking (blade hitting ice), water under the crisper drawers.

Temporary fix: a manual defrost. LG's guidance for an FF code is to unplug the fridge and leave both doors open for at least 24 hours so the ice blocking the fan can melt. If the ice comes back within weeks, a defrost part has failed.

2. Both sections warm, lights on, and the back of the fridge is quiet or clicks

Likely causes (in this order): Display Mode, a failed condenser fan (CF), a loose or oxidized compressor connector, a failed run capacitor, or a failed linear compressor or main/inverter board.

What a technician checks: iFixit's LG troubleshooting guide notes that LG fridges, even with linear compressors, use a run capacitor, and that the main control board on many models has an LED blink code for compressor faults. The codes it lists are one blink = current/voltage error, two = piston stroke overrun, five = locked piston, six = high current. If those point to the compressor, iFixit says a professional should evaluate it.

3. Compressor runs constantly, but nothing gets cold (or Er CL / Er CH)

Likely causes: a refrigerant leak, a restriction in the sealed system, or a worn compressor that runs but doesn't pump.

Signs: the evaporator shows only a partial frost pattern (or none), the compressor is hot and never cycles off, temperatures creep up over days, or LG shows Er CL or Er CH.

This is a sealed-system repair. It means finding the leak, replacing the compressor and/or filter-drier, brazing, pulling a vacuum, and recharging refrigerant by weight. It's not a DIY job, and it's where the repair-vs-replace math matters most.

The linear compressor question: what you need to know

LG markets its linear and inverter linear compressors for efficiency and quiet running. When one fails, owners often learn three things the hard way:

  1. The part may be covered; the labor usually isn't. LG's US refrigerator warranty gives 1 year parts and labor on the fridge, 5 years parts and labor on the sealed system (condenser, dryer, connecting tubing, evaporator) and the compressor, then compressor part only for years 6–10. "Consumer will be charged for labor." Replacement parts are covered for the rest of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer.
  2. Labor and refrigerant are the expensive part. A compressor swap is a multi-hour sealed-system job. Even with a free compressor, the out-of-pocket bill in years 6–10 can approach the cost of a budget new fridge. Get a written quote that separates part, labor, refrigerant, and filter-drier.
  3. Diagnosis matters. A bad run capacitor, a loose connector, a failed condenser fan, or a board fault can look like a dead compressor. Ask the tech how they confirmed it (winding test, capacitor test, board blink code, sealed-system readings).

Before you pay anything: find your purchase receipt (warranty years count from the original retail purchase date), check your model's warranty on LG's warranty page, and request service through LG if you're inside the 5-year window.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new fridge cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your fridge, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use 12 years if you don't know)

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider energy savings of a new model
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old LG French-door shows Er CL. It's inside the 5-year sealed-system parts-and-labor window, so R = service fee only, if any. → Use LG warranty service.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 7-year-old LG French-door has a failed linear compressor. The part is covered (year 7), but labor/refrigerant R = $800; new fridge N = $2,000.
800 ÷ 2,000 = 40%; life used 7 ÷ 12 = 58% → Repair is defensible, but get a second quote and ask about the labor warranty.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG with a failed compressor, out of warranty. R = $1,500, N = $2,000.
1,500 ÷ 2,000 = 75%; life used = 92% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a refrigerant leak that's come back, a second sealed-system repair, a compressor failure after year 10, or rust/cabinet damage.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fan, sensor, defrost part, or capacitor; the fridge is inside LG's 5-year sealed-system window; or it's built into your cabinetry.

Questions to ask any technician:

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans cap or exclude refrigerant and sealed-system work, and a fridge that's already broken is usually not covered.

FAQ

Why is my LG refrigerator not cooling but the freezer works?
Most often frost on the evaporator is blocking airflow to the fridge, caused by a defrost heater, sensor, or fan problem. An FF, rF, dH, or dS code supports that. A 24-hour manual defrost is a temporary fix.

Why does my LG refrigerator say OFF?
It's in Display (Demo) Mode, which disables cooling. On 2019+ models, open a fridge door, hold Ice Plus + Refrigerator until it beeps, then keep holding Refrigerator and press Ice Plus three times.

What does Er CL or Er CH mean on an LG fridge?
LG says they indicate insufficient cooling or abnormal temperature, with possible causes including low refrigerant or a leak, a compressor or valve problem, or a sealed-system blockage. Close the doors, unplug for 5 minutes, and request service if it persists.

Does LG cover the linear compressor for 10 years?
LG's US warranty covers the linear/inverter compressor part for 10 years from purchase, but parts and labor only for the first 5 years. In years 6–10, you pay labor.

How do I reset my LG refrigerator?
Unplug it for 5 minutes, then plug it directly into a wall outlet. Allow up to 24 hours to cool, or 2–3 days after installation or repair.

Is it worth replacing the compressor on an LG fridge?
If you're under 5 years, use LG warranty service. In years 6–10, compare the labor quote to a new fridge. Past 10 years and out of warranty, replacing usually makes more sense.

How long will my food stay safe?
About 4 hours in a closed fridge, per the USDA. Throw out perishables kept above 40 °F for more than 2 hours.
