LG Dryer Not Heating? Causes, Parts, Repair Costs and Repair vs Replace (2026)
Quick answer
LG's own support team says a dryer that isn't heating or takes too long is usually an airflow problem, not a broken part. Start with the free causes:
- A blocked or crushed vent. LG dryers show d80 / d90 / d95 (about 80%, 90%, or 95% blocked) or Flow Sense bars when the exhaust is restricted. A blocked vent also makes safety parts like the thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat trip.
- Power or gas supply. Electric LG dryers need a 240 V supply, usually on a double (two-pole) breaker. If one half trips, the drum can turn with no heat. LG's nP code means "no current detected at the heater." Gas dryers show gAS when no gas is reaching the burner.
- Settings that look like "no heat." Energy Saver is on by default for Cotton/Normal on many models and air-dries without heat for most of the cycle. Dirty moisture sensor bars or small loads can end a cycle early.
If none of those fix it, a part has failed. On electric models that's usually the heating element, thermal fuse, or high-limit thermostat. On gas models it's usually the igniter, flame sensor, or gas valve coils. Gas repairs are a job for a pro.
Repair or replace? Most no-heat parts are inexpensive, so repairing usually wins unless the dryer is old and needs a control board or a second major part. Use the calculator below.

Which LG dryer do you have?
Find the model and serial number on the label, usually inside the door frame. The model number tells you whether it's electric or gas and which buttons start LG's Installation Test.
| Model prefix (examples) | Fuel | How to recognize it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLE, DLEX (e.g. DLE3400, DLE7300, DLEX3900, DLEX8900) | Electric | 240 V cord, large 3- or 4-prong plug, no gas line | Most common LG dryer. Element, thermal fuse, high-limit |
| DLG, DLGX (e.g. DLG3401, DLG7301, DLGX3901, DLGX8901) | Gas | Gas line with shutoff valve + ordinary 120 V plug | Igniter, flame sensor, valve coils. Pro recommended |
| DLHC (e.g. DLHC1455, DLHC4002) | Electric heat-pump / hybrid condensing | No outside vent; drain hose or water container | Different system. LE2 / AE / CE1 = compressor fault. Not covered by most of this guide |
| WashTower / stacked units | Electric or gas (check model) | Single tall unit with dryer on top | Same logic, but access is harder; consider a pro |
Five-minute checks before you call anyone
- Check both halves of the breaker (electric). Turn the dryer's breaker fully OFF, wait at least 10 seconds, then turn it back ON. LG notes that electric units use two breakers (or a two-pole breaker) while gas units usually use one. If one half trips, you can get a spinning drum with no heat.
- Check the gas valve (gas). Make sure the shutoff valve behind the dryer is ON (handle parallel to the pipe) and the flexible gas line isn't kinked. LG's gAS code means the dryer isn't receiving gas.
- Turn off Energy Saver. On many LG models, Energy Saver is on by default for Cotton/Normal and air-dries without heat for most of the cycle. Press it once to turn it off for one cycle, or hold it for 3 seconds to change the default (on models that support this).
- Pick a heated cycle. Make sure you didn't select Air Dry or a low-temperature setting by mistake.
- Clean the lint filter, and wash it. Remove lint before every load. LG suggests washing the screen with warm water and a soft brush now and then and letting it dry fully. Fabric-softener film can block airflow even when the screen looks clean.
- Check the vent behind the dryer. The duct should be straight or a gentle S-curve, not crushed, kinked, coiled, or loose. LG recommends rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.
- Check the vent outside. Run Air Dry and look at the outdoor hood. The flaps should open all the way with strong airflow. Clear any lint; replace a cover that won't open.
- Wipe the moisture sensor bars. LG says to clean them once a month: wipe each bar 4–5 times with a damp cloth and let them dry. Dirty bars can end a cycle while clothes are still damp.
- Power-cycle it. Unplug the dryer (or switch off the breaker), press and hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds, then restore power and try a heated cycle.
Smell gas? Don't touch light switches or the dryer. Leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't try to repair a gas valve yourself.
Run LG's Installation Test (2 minutes, no tools)
LG's built-in Installation Test checks airflow and heating and reads the temperature inside the dryer. It's the fastest way to tell "vent problem" from "heating problem."
- Empty the drum, clean the lint filter, and make sure the dryer is cool and off.
- Press and release POWER, then immediately press and hold the two test buttons for your model (before the startup chime ends; it may take a few tries):
| Buttons to hold | LG models (from LG's chart) |
|---|---|
| Temp + Signal | DLEX\*\00\ / DLGX\*\01\, DLE3500 / DLE3460 / DLG3501 / DLG3461, DLE7300 / DLG7300, DLE7400 / DLG7400 |
| Temp + Wrinkle Care | DL3400 / DLG3401, DLE7100 / DLG7101, DLE7150 / DLG7151, DLE7000 / DLG7001 |
| Temp + Energy Saver | DLE3600 / DLG3601 / DLG6101 |
| More Time + Damp Dry Signal | DLEX8900 / DLGX8901 |
| Low Static + Options | DLEX6700 / DLGX6700, DLEX6500 / DLGX6500, DLEX5500 / DLGX5500 |
- The display should show "InS." Press START/PAUSE. Note the first number shown and the highest number before the display returns to "InS" after about a minute. These numbers are temperatures inside the dryer.
- After about 2 minutes it shows "End" or "0"; about 20 seconds later it goes blank or flashes an error code.
How to read the result:
| What you see | What LG says it means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| d80 / d85 / d90 / d95 or Flow Sense bars | Airflow restricted between the dryer and the outside exit | Clean the vent (below). Professional vent cleaning if it's inside the walls |
| nP or PS | Electrical supply problem | Breaker / cord / outlet checks (below) |
| Numbers stayed the same or went up and down | Heating system problem | Schedule a repair (part has likely failed) |
| Numbers rose by 2–9 | Heating, but airflow is restricted | Vent cleaning |
| Numbers rose by 10 or more, no code | Heating works | Settings/sensor issue: Energy Saver, sensor bars, load type |
LG dryer error codes that point to "no heat"
These come from LG's US dryer error-code guides. LG notes the guides cover all models, so your display may differ.
| Code | LG's meaning | What it usually means for you | DIY or pro? |
|---|---|---|---|
| d75 / d80 / d90 / d95 | Exhaust duct about 75% / 80% / 90% / 95% blocked | Lint-clogged or crushed vent. Older LG guidance adds that on gas dryers, d80 can also mean not enough gas supply | DIY, or a vent-cleaning pro |
| Flow Sense bars (2 or 4 bars) | Exhaust system severely restricted | Same as above | DIY / vent pro |
| nP | No current detected at the heater | Usually home wiring: a tripped half of the breaker, loose cord, or bad outlet | DIY checks, then electrician or repair |
| PS | Improper voltage in the power cord | Often the red and white wires reversed on the terminal block (new installs) | Installer / electrician |
| gAS | Dryer isn't receiving gas | Valve off, kinked line, or a supply/valve problem | Check valve, then pro |
| tE / tE1–tE6 | Thermistor (temperature sensor) problem | Failed thermistor or wiring | Reset, then moderate DIY or pro |
| HS | Humidity (moisture) sensor error | Dryer runs about 2½ hours and seems not to dry | Clean sensors, then repair |
| EHE | Heater drawing too much current (can trip the main fuse) | Shorted element or wiring | Pro / advanced DIY |
| PF | Power failure | Usually after an outage | Reset (hold Start/Pause 5 s while unplugged) |
How to fix nP / PS, per LG: make sure the cord is firmly plugged into a grounded outlet that matches the dryer's 240 V rating plate; turn the dryer breaker OFF for at least 10 seconds; have a licensed electrician check the outlet if it persists. On a new install, ask the installer to check the cord and terminal block. If it still won't heat, LG says the dryer needs service.
Diagnose by symptom → likely part
Before you touch parts: Unplug the dryer (and turn off the gas valve on gas models). Electric dryers run on 240 V. Work on gas valves, gas lines, or burners should be left to a qualified technician. If a thermal fuse has blown, find out why (usually a blocked vent) before you replace it, or the new one will blow too.
1. Electric: drum turns, no heat at all
Likely causes (in this order): a tripped half of the 240 V breaker (nP), a blown thermal fuse, an open heating element, a failed high-limit thermostat, or (less often) a cycling thermostat, thermistor, or control-board relay.
Signs: cold air from the start, the Installation Test temperature doesn't climb, or an nP code with a good breaker.
| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal fuse | One-time safety cutoff; blows when the dryer overheats | Easy–moderate |
| Heating element (heater assembly) | Heats the air on electric models | Moderate |
| High-limit thermostat | Cuts heat if the heater housing overheats | Moderate |
| Thermistor / cycling thermostat | Reports or regulates exhaust temperature | Moderate |
| Main control board (relay) | Switches power to the heater | Moderate–hard; diagnose first |

2. Gas: drum turns, no heat (or gAS code)
Likely causes: the gas valve is off or the line is kinked, a cracked igniter, a failed flame sensor, worn gas valve coils, or a blown thermal fuse.
Signs a tech will look for: the igniter doesn't glow (igniter or flame sensor); the igniter glows but the flame never lights or lights and goes out within seconds (often the valve coils); no click or glow at all (thermal fuse, flame sensor, or wiring).
Gas dryers: we recommend a pro. A gas-valve or burner repair means working on a gas appliance, and a mistake can cause a leak or carbon monoxide risk. A qualified technician can test the parts and check for leaks after the repair.

| Part | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Igniter | Glows to light the gas | Moderate (pro recommended) |

3. Heats a little, or takes two or more cycles to dry
Likely causes: a restricted vent (by far the most common, per LG), Energy Saver mode, dirty moisture sensor bars, an overloaded drum, or a cycling thermostat or thermistor that cuts heat too early.
Signs: Installation Test temperature rises only 2–9 degrees, d80/d90/d95 or Flow Sense bars, the outside flap barely opens, or the top of the dryer feels very hot.
| Part / product | What it does | DIY difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Dryer vent cleaning kit (brush + rods) | Clears lint from the duct run | Easy |
| Rigid or semi-rigid metal transition duct | Replaces crushed or foil/plastic duct behind the dryer | Easy |
| Outdoor vent hood | Replaces a flap that won't open | Easy–moderate |
| Moisture sensor bars | Detect when clothes are dry | Moderate |
- Check dryer vent cleaning kit price at PartSelect Impact subID: lg-dryer-no-heat_vent-kit

- Check semi-rigid dryer duct price at PartSelect Impact subID: lg-dryer-no-heat_duct
- Check semi-rigid dryer duct price at RepairClinic CJ SID: lg-dryer-no-heat_duct
If the duct runs inside a wall or the roof, LG recommends a professional vent cleaner and suggests asking them for the total duct length and the number of 90° elbows, because long runs with many bends cause hard-to-find blockages.
4. Heats, then shuts off early, or the cycle is short
Likely causes: a small load that doesn't touch the sensors (LG says the time drops to 15–20 minutes, then 6, then off), residue on the sensor bars, or an interrupted power supply.
Fix: add a few items or use Timed Dry / Speed Dry for small loads, sheets, and bulky single items; clean the sensor bars.
Why a blocked vent matters (it's a fire issue, not just a slow-dry issue)
The US Fire Administration estimates about 2,900 residential clothes dryer fires a year in the US, and found "failure to clean" was the leading contributing factor (34%). Lint was the most common item first ignited. A blocked vent makes the dryer run hotter and longer, and it's also the most common reason a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat trips.
What to do: clean the lint filter every load, use metal (rigid or semi-rigid) duct, and have the full vent run cleaned about once a year, or sooner if drying times get longer. Don't run the dryer when you leave home or go to bed.
What LG's warranty covers on a dryer
LG's 2026 US dryer limited warranty:
| Period (from purchase or delivery) | What's covered | Who pays labor |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Parts and labor on defective parts | LG |
| Years 1–3 | Dryer drum (part only) | You |
| Years 1–10 | Dual Inverter Compressor Direct Drive motor (stator or rotor) on models that have one (part only) | You |
What this means for a no-heat problem: heating elements, thermal fuses, thermostats, igniters, and gas valve coils are covered only in the first year. After that, you pay parts and labor. LG's warranty also excludes failures caused by "inadequate supply of air," improper installation, and incorrect electrical voltage, so a dryer that overheated because of a blocked or long vent may not be covered even in year 1. Keep your proof of purchase; LG requires it for warranty service.

Repair vs. replace calculator
1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new dryer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your dryer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use [PLACEHOLDER: dryer lifespan, e.g. 12–13 years — cite source] if you don't know)
Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life
| Life used under 50% | Life used over 50% | |
|---|---|---|
| Repair under 50% of new | ✅ Repair | 🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider energy savings of a new model |
| Repair over 50% of new | 🤔 Get a second quote first | ❌ Replace |
Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG electric dryer with a blown thermal fuse and a lint-packed vent. Fuse + vent cleaning R = $300; new dryer N = $1,000.
300 ÷ 1,000 = 30%; life used 6 ÷ 12 = 50% → Repair (and clean the vent, or the fuse will blow again).
Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 4-year-old LG gas dryer, igniter glows but no flame. Valve coils installed by a pro R = $250; N = $1,200.
250 ÷ 1,200 = 21%; life used = 33% → Repair.
Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): An 11-year-old LG dryer needs a main control board after an earlier element replacement. R = $500, N = $900.
500 ÷ 900 = 56%; life used = 92% → Replace.
Tips toward replacing: a second major repair within a year or two, a control-board failure on an old dryer, a rusted or damaged drum, or bearing/motor noise on top of the heat problem.
Tips toward repairing: it's a fuse, thermostat, element, igniter, coils, or sensor; it's inside LG's first-year warranty; or the dryer is part of a stacked WashTower that's expensive to replace.

2. A partner appliance pro (out of warranty, gas dryers, or a second opinion).
Our call line connects you with an independent appliance repair provider in your area. For a gas dryer, ask whether they work on gas appliances and will leak-test after the repair.

3. A vent cleaning specialist. If the Installation Test points to airflow (d80/d90/d95, Flow Sense, or a small temperature rise) and your duct runs inside the walls, a vent cleaner is the right call, not an appliance tech.
4. DIY with the right part. Thermal fuses, thermostats, heating elements, thermistors, and sensor bars are common DIY repairs on electric models. Order by your exact model number.
Questions to ask any technician:
- Did you run LG's Installation Test, and what were the temperature readings?
- Which part failed, and how did you test it (continuity, resistance, voltage at the heater)?
- If the thermal fuse blew, did you check the vent and airflow so it won't happen again?
- For gas: do you leak-test after replacing coils or the igniter?
- Can you split the quote into part, labor, and trip fee?
- What warranty do you give on your labor?
Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?
A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. Read the exclusions carefully: many plans exclude vent cleaning and damage from a blocked vent, and a dryer that's already broken is usually not covered. Most single no-heat repairs on a dryer cost less than a year of plan fees.

FAQ
Why is my LG dryer running but not heating?
LG says it's most often restricted airflow: a clogged lint filter or a blocked, crushed, or too-long vent. Also check that both halves of the breaker are on (electric), the gas valve is open (gas), and Energy Saver is off. If LG's Installation Test shows the temperature not rising, a heating part has likely failed.
What does d80, d90, or d95 mean on an LG dryer?
The exhaust is about 80%, 90%, or 95% blocked. Clean the lint filter, straighten or replace the duct behind the dryer, and make sure the outside flap opens fully. On gas dryers, LG notes d80 can also mean not enough gas. If the duct runs through the walls, call a vent cleaning specialist.
What does nP mean on an LG dryer?
LG says nP means no current is detected at the heater, usually a home wiring problem. Turn the dryer breaker off for at least 10 seconds, check the cord and outlet (240 V, grounded), and have a licensed electrician check it if the code returns.
Can a clogged vent stop an LG dryer from heating?
Yes. Restricted airflow can trip safety parts like the thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat, and it's also a fire risk. Clean the vent before replacing those parts, or they may fail again.
Where is the thermal fuse on an LG dryer?
It varies by model, so check the parts diagram for your exact model number before ordering or opening the cabinet. Unplug the dryer first.
My LG gas dryer won't ignite. Can I fix it myself?
Check that the gas valve is on and the line isn't kinked. Beyond that, igniter, flame sensor, and valve coil repairs involve a gas appliance, so we recommend a qualified technician. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility.
Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old LG dryer?
Often yes if it's a fuse, thermostat, element, igniter, or coils, since those parts are usually inexpensive. If it needs a control board or keeps failing, compare the quote to a new dryer using the calculator above.

- Affiliate links: Some part links go to retailers such as PartSelect and RepairClinic. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
- Call line: Phone numbers labeled "partner pro" are operated by a third-party lead service that routes your call to an independent repair provider in your area. We may be paid for calls. We don't employ the technicians, and we don't guarantee their work, pricing, or availability. Confirm licensing, insurance, and quotes directly with the provider.
- Prices are estimates and change often. Always get a written quote.
- Safety: Unplug appliances before working on them. Electric dryers use 240 V. Gas appliance repairs should be done by a qualified technician. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility. If you're unsure, call a qualified professional.
We don't publish fake reviews or testimonials, and we never present a tracking phone number as a specific local business.
