Quick answer

OE means your LG washer couldn't drain. LG calls it a "Water Outlet Error." On top-load models, LG says the code appears when the washer hasn't been able to drain for 13 minutes. Newer front-load error lists group it with E03 / E21.

Most OE codes are free to fix. LG lists these causes:

  1. A clogged drain pump filter (front-load only). Lint, coins, hair ties, and socks collect behind a small door at the bottom front of the washer. LG recommends cleaning it once a month.
  2. A kinked, pinched, frozen, or too-high drain hose. Washers vibrate, and the hose often ends up crushed between the washer and the wall.
  3. Your home's drain is clogged. If the standpipe or floor drain is blocked, the washer can't empty no matter how well the pump works.
  4. Too many suds. LG says excess suds create air pockets the pump can't move, which can trigger OE even with a clean filter.

If you've cleaned the filter and the hose drains freely, run LG's Spin Only test. If you don't hear the pump hum in the first 15 seconds, LG says the washer needs service. The drain pump is the usual part, and it's one of the cheaper washer repairs.

Repair or replace? A drain pump is almost always worth replacing unless the washer is old and has other major problems (bearings, tub, or control board). See the calculator below.

Water on the floor? Turn the washer off and unplug it before you touch anything. Turn off the water taps behind the washer. Then mop up and work through the steps below. Water near outlets and cords is a shock risk.

Which LG washer do you have?

Your model number is on a label, usually on the back of the washer, on the door frame (front-load), or under the lid (top-load). It tells you which steps apply.

TypeHow to recognize itHas a drain pump filter?Notes

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

Do these in order. They clear most OE codes without opening the cabinet.

  1. Check the drain hose behind the washer. Pull the washer out far enough to see the whole hose. LG says to straighten any kinks and make sure it isn't pinched between the washer and the wall. LG recommends leaving at least 4 inches (10 cm) behind the washer and 1 inch (2 cm) on each side.
  2. Check the hose height. LG lists a hose that's "installed too high" as an OE cause. Your owner's manual gives the right drain height for your model. Don't extend or raise the hose beyond what the manual allows.
  3. Test your home's drain. Lift the drain hose out of the standpipe and put the end in a bucket. Run Spin Only. LG says that if water drains normally from the hose, the washer is working and your home's drain is the problem. That's a plumber or drain-cleaning job, not a washer repair.
  4. Think about the weather. If the washer is in a garage, basement, or unheated room and it's been below freezing, the hose or pump may be frozen. LG's fix is below. Don't pour boiling water into the drum. LG says it can deform or damage parts.
  5. Look for suds. If you can see a lot of foam in the door glass, you've probably used too much detergent or a non-HE detergent. LG suggests running Tub Clean and using less detergent next time.
  6. Clean the drain pump filter (front-load). This is the big one. Full steps in the next section.
  7. Run Spin Only to see if the water drains and the code clears.

How to clean the LG drain pump filter (front-load, 10–15 minutes)

LG recommends cleaning this filter monthly, and every time you see OE. You'll need a shallow pan or baking dish, a few towels, and a soft brush or old toothbrush.

Caution from LG: the water inside may be hot. Let it cool before you drain it.

  1. Turn the washer off and unplug it.
  2. Open the access panel at the bottom front of the washer. On many models it's at the bottom left. Pull the tab down and out.
  3. Drain the leftover water first. Inside you'll see a small residual drain hose (usually on the left) and the round filter cap (usually on the right). Pull the small hose out gently into your pan, then remove its plug.
    • LG warns not to pull the hose too far out, because it will kink and stop draining. If nothing comes out, push it back in about an inch.
    • If there's a full drum of water, this can take several pans. Plug the hose, empty the pan, repeat.
  4. Put a towel under the filter cap. Turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it. A little more water will run out.
  5. Clean the filter by hand with warm water and a soft brush. LG says not to put it in the dishwasher.
  6. Clean the opening. Reach in and remove anything stuck in the filter housing and around the base. Coins, buttons, bra wires, and small socks are common.
  7. Replug the residual hose and clip it back in place. LG notes the cap must be screwed on securely or it will leak.
  8. Reinstall the filter, turning it clockwise until it stops. Close the panel.
  9. Run Tub Clean (LG's recommended next step), then a normal cycle to see if OE is gone.

Tip: if the filter won't turn, it's often because there's still water pressure behind it. Drain more water through the small hose first. Don't use pliers on the cap; a cracked cap means ordering a new filter.

Run LG's Spin Only pump test (2 minutes)

This tells you whether the drain pump motor is running at all.

  1. Press Power to turn the washer on.
  2. Front-load: press Spin Speed until High is selected. Top-load: press Special Use (on models that have it) until Spin Only is lit.
  3. Press Start/Pause.
  4. Listen for the first 15 seconds. LG says you should hear a humming sound (the pump motor), and possibly water draining.

How to read the result:

What you hear / seeWhat it means (per LG)Next step
Humming, and water drains, code clearsPump works; the blockage was clearedRun Tub Clean, use less detergent, clean the filter monthly
Humming, but water doesn't drainPump runs; something is blocking the pathClean the filter (front-load), check the hose and house drain, check for freezing
Humming, filter clean, hose clear, OE still returnsMay be suds, a partial blockage between the tub and pump, or a weak pumpRun Tub Clean with less detergent; if OE returns, LG says request repair
No hum at allLG says the drain pump isn't workingRequest repair (pump, wiring, or control board)

Top-load tip from LG: if your model has no Spin Only button, you can force a drain by starting a cycle and pausing it. After about 8 minutes, LG says the washer times out, shows dr, and tries to drain.

Frozen washer? LG's thawing steps

If the washer sits somewhere that dropped below freezing, LG says you may see OE (can't drain), IE (no water in), or FF (freeze) codes.

  1. Remove the laundry and scoop out any standing water.
  2. Pour warm water, 122–140 °F (50–60 °C), into the drum. Close the door.
  3. Wait 1–2 hours (longer in a very cold room).
  4. If the drain hose is still frozen, wrap it in a towel soaked in warm water.
  5. Run Spin or Spin Only. If nothing drains, wait a little longer and try again.
  6. Finish with Rinse + Spin to make sure it runs normally.

Don't use boiling water. It's a burn risk and LG says it can damage the washer. To prevent it happening again, drain the washer and point the drain hose down before a cold spell.

Diagnose by symptom → likely part

Before you touch parts: Unplug the washer and turn off both water taps. Drain the drum first (see the filter steps above). Have towels ready. Find your model number before ordering anything, because LG drain pumps and filters vary by model.

1. OE, no hum during Spin Only (front-load or top-load)

Likely causes: a failed drain pump motor, a broken wire or connector at the pump, or (less often) a control-board fault.

Signs: silence when the washer tries to drain, water left in the drum after every cycle, a burnt smell near the pump, or the pump hums for a second and stops.

PartWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Drain pump (motor + housing)Pumps water out of the tubModerate
Drain pump filter / capCatches debris before the pumpEasy
Pump wiring harness / connectorCarries power to the pumpModerate
Main control boardSwitches the pump onModerate–hard; diagnose first

DIY or pro? On most front-loaders, the pump sits behind the filter at the bottom front. Many homeowners replace it with a screwdriver and a nut driver after draining the washer, but it means tipping or lying the washer back and dealing with water. If that sounds like too much, it's a short, routine job for a technician.

Pump hums but won't drain, and the filter is clean? Something may be stuck in the pump impeller or the hose between the tub and the pump. A tech can clear it, often without replacing the pump.

2. OE comes back every few weeks

Likely causes: debris building up again in the filter, too much detergent, a hose that's being pushed into a kink each time the washer vibrates, or a house drain that's partly blocked.

Fixes:

Part / productWhat it doesDIY difficulty
Replacement drain hoseReplaces a cracked, kinked, or too-short hoseEasy
Drain hose lint trap / meshKeeps lint out of your house drainEasy
HE washer cleaner tabletsRemoves detergent and softener buildupEasy

3. Washer drains slowly, then shows OE at the end of the cycle

Likely causes: a partly blocked filter, a weak pump, or a long or high drain run.

Signs: the cycle takes longer than normal, water is still in the drum when the spin starts, the spin is weak and clothes come out very wet, or you see UE (unbalanced) because the drum is spinning with water in it.

What to do: clean the filter, check the hose height against your manual, and run the bucket test (five-minute check #3). If it still drains slowly, the pump is likely wearing out.

4. OE plus a loud grinding or rattling during drain

Likely cause: a foreign object in the pump (a coin, button, or underwire). Unplug the washer, drain it, remove the filter, and look into the pump opening with a flashlight. If you can see the impeller, check that it turns freely. If it's cracked or won't spin, the pump needs replacing.

5. Top-load: OE, no filter, hose is fine

On top-load LG washers there's no user filter, so a blocked pump or hose usually means opening the cabinet. Run the bucket test first to rule out your house drain. If the washer still won't drain, request service or call a pro.

Why OE is urgent (and when it isn't)

A washer stuck with a drum full of water isn't dangerous by itself, but:

If the washer is draining but slowly, it's safe to keep using it while you sort out the cause. If it won't drain at all, stop using it until it's fixed.

What LG's warranty covers on a washer

LG's 2026 US washer limited warranty (the version for many current models):

Period (from purchase or delivery)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Parts and labor on internal/functional partsLG
Years 1–3Stainless steel tub (part only)You
Years 1–10Direct Drive Motor (stator and rotor) (part only)You

What this means for an OE problem: the drain pump, filter, hoses, and control board are only covered in year 1. After that you pay for parts and labor. The direct-drive motor that spins the drum is not the drain pump, so the 10-year coverage doesn't apply to an OE repair.

Some LG models have different terms. For example, LG's warranty for one 2026 combo model (WM9998HBA) lists 2 years parts and labor. Check your exact model on LG's site.

Also note: LG's warranty doesn't cover problems caused by installation or your home's plumbing. If the bucket test shows your house drain is clogged, that's not a warranty claim. Keep your proof of purchase; LG requires it for warranty service.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the repair quote? → R (subtract anything LG's warranty covers)
2. What does a comparable new washer cost, installed? → N
3. How old is your washer, and how long should it last? → Age and Life (use [PLACEHOLDER: washer lifespan, e.g. 10–13 years — cite source] if you don't know)

Step A — Cost ratio: R ÷ N
Step B — Life used: Age ÷ Life

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of new✅ Repair🤔 Repair is usually fine. Consider water/energy savings of a new model
Repair over 50% of new🤔 Get a second quote first❌ Replace

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A 3-year-old LG front-loader shows OE. The filter was packed with lint and a sock. R = $0. → Clean it and keep using it.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 6-year-old LG front-loader, no hum during Spin Only. Pro-installed drain pump R = $275; new washer N = $1,000.
275 ÷ 1,000 = 28%; life used 6 ÷ 11 = 55% → Repair is usually fine.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old LG top-loader needs a drain pump and has loud bearings. Pump + bearing job R = $650; N = $850.
650 ÷ 850 = 76%; life used = 91% → Replace.

Tips toward replacing: OE on top of bearing noise, a leaking tub, a control-board failure, or a second big repair in a year.
Tips toward repairing: it's the filter, hose, or pump; the washer is inside LG's 1-year warranty; or it's part of a stacked set or WashTower that's expensive to replace.

Optional: is an appliance warranty worth it?

A home warranty (service contract) can cover repairs for a yearly fee plus a per-visit service fee. A single drain-pump repair often costs less than a year of plan fees.

FAQ

What does OE mean on an LG washer?
LG calls it a Water Outlet Error: the washer couldn't drain. On top-load models it appears after about 13 minutes of failing to drain. The usual causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked or frozen hose, a clogged house drain, or too many suds.

How do I clear the OE code on my LG washer?
Fix the cause first: clean the drain pump filter (front-load), straighten the hose, and check your house drain. Then run Spin Only or Tub Clean. The code clears once the washer drains normally.

Where is the drain filter on an LG washer?
On front-load models and combos, it's behind the small access panel at the bottom front of the washer. LG says top-load washers don't have a drain pump filter.

How do I drain an LG washer with OE?
Unplug it, open the bottom access panel, pull out the small residual drain hose into a shallow pan, and remove its plug. Empty the pan as needed, then remove the filter by turning it counterclockwise.

Why does my LG washer keep getting OE?
Usually debris building up again in the filter, too much detergent, a hose that keeps kinking, or a partly clogged house drain. Clean the filter monthly, use measured HE detergent, and run the bucket test.

Is it the drain pump?
Run Spin Only. If you hear no hum in the first 15 seconds, LG says the pump isn't working and the washer needs repair.

Is it worth fixing an LG washer that won't drain?
Usually yes. A drain pump is one of the cheaper washer repairs. Replacement makes more sense only if the washer is old and has other major problems, like bearing noise or a control-board failure.
