Quick answer

Most GE dishwashers that "won't start" have nothing broken. GE's own support pages and FAQ list these checks:

  1. Power. No lights and no sounds when you press a button means a power problem. Check for a wall switch (GE notes some kitchens have one; it's often near the disposer switch), the breaker or fuse, and, if it plugs in under the sink, the GFCI outlet and a loose plug.
  2. Door latched. Push the door shut until the latch clicks solidly, with both racks pushed all the way back. A rack that isn't in, a pan handle, or silverware sticking out can stop it.
  3. Control Lock. If the display lights but buttons do nothing, the controls may be locked. Depending on the model, press Lock twice within 3 seconds, or press and hold the lock pad (or the pad pair your manual names) for 3 seconds.
  4. Top controls? On electronic top-control models, GE says to close the door within 4 seconds of pressing Start.
  5. Delay Start. GE's Control Lock doesn't block a delay, so a delay can still be counting down. Cancel it with Start/Reset (or hold Start 3 seconds on top-control models).
  6. Leak Protection (LCD models). Some models with an LCD display won't run while a leak-protection feature is active.
  7. Reset. GE's manual says press Start/Reset twice. For a control error, it says switch the dishwasher's breaker off for 30 seconds.

If those don't fix it, the parts that usually fail are the door latch or door switch, a thermal fuse (on many GE models it comes with a wire harness), the user interface (buttons), the control board, or the pump motor.

Which GE dishwasher do you have?

GE's manual says to find the model and serial number on the label on the left tub wall (open the door). GE names these model prefixes in its door-latch article:

Model starts with (check label)What GE says that matters for a start
GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ZDTOn models with an adjustable upper rack, the rack must sit at the same height on both sides or the door won't close
Models with controls on top of the doorPress Start, then close the door within 4 seconds (GE FAQ)
Models with an LCD displayLeak Protection can stop the controls responding
Models beginning PDW or CDW (in manual 49-55076)Five-year control-module warranty term (see "Warranty")

On GDF / GDT / PDT / CDT / DDT / ZDT models with an adjustable upper rack, GE says the rack must be raised or lowered on both sides; one side up stops the door from closing. Our GE dishwasher not draining and GE dishwasher not cleaning guides cover the next problems in the cycle.

Five-minute checks before you call anyone

  1. Lights and sounds? Press any pad. Nothing at all = power (wall switch, breaker, GFCI, plug). Lights but no cycle = latch, lock, delay, or timing.
  2. Wall switch: look by the sink and disposer switch, and inside the sink cabinet, for a switch you don't normally use.
  3. Racks: push both racks all the way in. Check nothing pokes through the lower rack.
  4. Click: close the door firmly. It should latch with a solid click.
  5. Lock light: if "Lock" or "Lock Controls" is lit, turn it off.
  6. Top-control: press Start, then close the door within 4 seconds.
  7. Reset: press Start/Reset twice, or switch off the breaker for 30 seconds.

How to know it's fixed: GE's manual says water fill begins and the wash action starts about 60 seconds later.

What GE's own pages say vs. each other

GE's support articles, FAQ, and manual give different instructions for the same buttons:

GE manual 49-55076 and support article 18900 (older electronic models)GE support article 18900 (newer models) and GE dishwasher FAQ
How to unlock the controlsTouch Lock twice within 3 secondsPress and hold the designated pad (or pad pair, such as Dry Boost + Steam, or the Cycle pad) for 3 seconds
How to reset"Dishwasher won't run": press Start/Reset two times. Control error with beeping: breaker off 30 secondsFAQ: for beeping or blinking lights, turn the breaker off 30 seconds
How to cancel Delay StartNot covered on the pages we readPress Start/Reset once, or hold Start 3 seconds on top-control models; with a Delay Hours button, press it until the display clears
Will Control Lock stop a delayed start?โ€”No. GE says Delay Start is the one option Control Lock doesn't affect

Our take: look at your panel. A pad marked Lock on an older model means two quick touches. A newer panel that labels a pad pair for Lock means hold 3 seconds. If unsure, try both, then use the 30-second breaker reset. A single touch of Start/Reset on many GE models pumps out and turns the dishwasher off, so don't press it repeatedly unless you mean to cancel.

Diagnose by symptom โ†’ likely part

Before you touch parts: Switch off the breaker (or unplug). Turn off the water under the sink. Have towels ready.

1. Door won't latch, or the latch feels loose

Likely cause: a worn or broken door latch, once you've ruled out racks, items, the cabinet, and (on new units) a stiff gasket.

DIY difficulty: Moderate.

Door switchTells the board the door is latchedAdvanced

2. Completely dead with power at the breaker

Likely cause: a blown thermal fuse (on many GE models it's sold as a wire harness with the fuse) or a failed control board. A tech should find out why the fuse blew.

DIY difficulty: Advanced โ†’ Pro only.

3. Some pads don't respond, Lock is off

Likely cause: a failed user interface (the pad and light board).

4. Control error that comes back after a reset

Likely cause: the control board. GE says if the Clean light keeps flashing, or the error remains after a 30-second breaker reset, call for service.

5. Fills, then hums but won't wash

Likely cause: the pump and motor assembly. GE notes a motor can hum in a dishwasher that isn't used regularly; if it's used often and still hums without washing, the pump motor is suspect.

Recalls

We checked the CPSC site on 2026-10-30. Two GE dishwasher recalls involve wiring or switches that can fail:

These are older dishwashers; most are long out of service. If yours matches, use the recall remedy, not a paid repair. Search your exact model at cpsc.gov/Recalls.

What GE's warranty covers on a dishwasher

Per the GE dishwasher limited warranty printed in GE dishwasher owner's manual 49-55076 (see Sources); terms vary by model and year, so check your own manual:

Period (from original purchase)What's coveredWho pays labor
Year 1Any part that fails because of a defect in materials or workmanship, plus labor and in-home serviceGE
Five years (models beginning PDW or CDW in that manual)Racks and the electronic control moduleYou pay labor
Lifetime (same models)Stainless tub or door liner if it fails to contain waterGE, including labor

What this means for a dishwasher that won't start: in year 1, a failed latch, switch, fuse, interface, board, or motor is covered. On models with the five-year term, a failed electronic control module is a parts-only claim. GE doesn't cover service trips to teach you how to use the product, replacement of house fuses or resetting of circuit breakers, or improper installation, so a tripped breaker, an off wall switch, or a door hitting the cabinet usually isn't a warranty repair. GE's support article says the warranty doesn't cover installation issues. Keep proof of the original purchase date.

Repair vs. replace calculator

1. What's the all-in repair cost? โ†’ R = trip/diagnostic fee + part + labor + tax, minus anything GE's warranty (or a recall) covers
2. What does a comparable new dishwasher cost, all-in? โ†’ N = unit + delivery + installation + haul-away
3. How old is your dishwasher, and how long should it last? โ†’ Age and Life (HomeGuide says dishwashers last 8โ€“15 years; use 10 if you don't know)
4. How much have you spent on repairs in the last 2 years? โ†’ Past

Step A โ€” Cost ratio: R รท N
Step B โ€” Life used: Age รท Life
Step C โ€” Repeat-repair check: (R + Past) รท N

Life used under 50%Life used over 50%
Repair under 50% of newโœ… Repair๐Ÿค” Repair is usually fine. Check for other wear
Repair over 50% of new๐Ÿค” Get a second quote firstโŒ Replace

Repeat-repair rule: if Step C is over 50%, lean toward replacing. Fixr adds that if a dishwasher is ten years or older, replacing the whole unit may be the more economical option. If the part is no longer available for your model, replace.

Worked example 1 (illustrative numbers): A GE dishwasher shows no lights at all. The wall switch next to the disposer switch was off. R = $0.
โ†’ Not a repair.

Worked example 2 (illustrative numbers): A 5-year-old GE Profile won't latch; the racks are in and nothing sticks out, and the latch handle moves without catching. A tech replaces the latch: R = $160; N = $1,000.
160 รท 1,000 = 16%; life used 5 รท 10 = 50% โ†’ Repair.

Worked example 3 (illustrative numbers): A 10-year-old GE dishwasher shows a control error that returns after a 30-second breaker reset. The board quote is $450, a year after a pump motor ($420): N = $800.
450 รท 800 = 56% (inside the 50โ€“60% second-quote zone); life used 10 รท 10 = 100%; repeat check (450 + 420) รท 800 = 109% โ†’ Replace.

Tips toward replacing: a board or motor on an older dishwasher, repeat repairs, or parts no longer sold for your model.
Tips toward repairing: it's a latch, switch, fuse, or interface; the dishwasher is under about 7 years old; or it's in year 1 (or within a five-year control-module term).

Why 50%? It's the common rule of thumb for appliances. Some technician checklists draw the line a little higher, at about 60% of a new dishwasher's price, so treat a repair that costs 50โ€“60% of new as a second-quote zone, not an automatic replace.

FAQ

Why won't my GE dishwasher start?
GE lists power (wall switch, breaker, GFCI, loose plug), a door that isn't fully latched (racks not pushed in, items sticking out), Control Lock, Delay Start, and, on top-control models, not closing the door within 4 seconds of Start.

How do I unlock the controls on a GE dishwasher?
On older electronic models, touch Lock twice within 3 seconds. On many newer models, press and hold the pad or pad pair your manual names (such as Dry Boost and Steam) for 3 seconds.

How do I reset a GE dishwasher?
GE's manual says press Start/Reset twice. For a control error with beeping, switch off the dishwasher's breaker for 30 seconds, then try again.

Why does my GE dishwasher have no power?
Check the wall switch near the sink or disposer switch, the breaker or fuse, a GFCI outlet, and the plug under the sink. On a new install, have the installer check it; GE says the warranty doesn't cover installation issues.

Why does my new GE dishwasher door not latch?
GE says the new gasket can be stiff: push on the top center of the control panel while latching; it can take up to ten cycles to seat. Also check the door isn't hitting the cabinet or screws.

What does a flashing Clean light mean on a GE dishwasher?
With beeping, GE's manual calls it a control error. Press Start/Reset; if the Clean light keeps flashing, call for service.

How much does it cost to fix a GE dishwasher that won't start?
Often nothing. When we checked Sears PartsDirect on 2026-10-30, GE door latches listed at about $25 to $83. Fixr puts a "will not start" repair at $100 to $600.
